about our vineyard
Tsapournakos
Tsapournakos is a Greek grape variety with a unique history. Its name "Tsapournakos" or "Tsaprounakos" probably comes from the Latin prunus (= plum), with the prefix "tsa" referring to the bunch (tsampi means bunch of grapes). Tsapournakos was saved and cultivated in the vineyards of Velvento,as a non-vigorousgrape variety by the winegrowers of the region, before 1940.
Tsapournakos is cultivated at an altitude of 400 meters, between PieriaMountains and Lake Polyphytos. The ideal climate contributes to the perfect ripening of the grapes and to the expressiveness of this complex grape variety.
Winemaking & aging
At the right time, the grapes are harvested by hand and a first sorting is done in the vineyard. After that, the grapes are transported to the winery where a second sorting follows. Only the best grapes will give their exquisite juice for Tsapournakos. The wine fermentsin stainless steel tanks and then it ages in Balkan oak barrels for 14 months. It is bottled enclosing all the floral and elegant aromas of the variety.
Tasting notes
It has deep purple color and intoxicating nose full of aromas of violet, vanilla, butter, pepper, oak, sour cherry, black cherry, raspberry jam and black tea leaves. On the palate it has medium to full body, marked acidity and firm but ripe tannins. Ripe red and black fruits are harmoniously blended with notes of sweet spices and purple flowers in an impressive bouquet.
Food & winepairing
It can accompany rich meaty dishes such as beef steak, burger, braised beef with mushrooms and dried herbs and lamb chops.
