Kourites Red is the first wine made by Giannis Kamkoutis, the third generation of the winery and has great emotional value for us. It is a wine that marries the "king" of northern Greece, Xinomavro, along with the two great varieties of Bordeaux, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The result manages to combine the vegetal character of Xinomavro, the dense fruit of Merlot and the incredible structure of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes come from vineyards located at an altitude of 400 meters, between the Pieria Mountains and Polyphytos lake. The altitude in combination with the excellent microclimate provide ideal conditions for the slow and perfect ripening of the grapes.

Winemaking & aging

We watch the vineyard closely and at the right time the grapes are picked by hand and go through a strict sorting. Only the best grapes are included in Kourites Red. Then we take only the free run juice to ensure we got the best quality of tannins and maintain the elegance of the wine. The blend consists of 40% Xinomavro, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot. The wine ferments in stainless steel tanks, at controlled temperatures and then it ages in Balkan oak barrels for 12 months. After bottling, the wine matures for a few months in the bottle so when it will hit your glasses it will be complete and enjoyable.

Tasting notes

It has bright ruby color and elegant nose that unfolds gradually. Aromas of strawberry, cherry, red plum and redcurrant are mixed with notes of tomato, cinnamon, allspice, oak and tea leaves. It has medium body, high acidity and medium but elegant tannins. On the palate the fresh juicy red fruit meets the subtle sweet spices on an earthy background. It has a long and spicy aftertaste.

Food & winepairing

It can accompany red meat but also dishes of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine such as moussaka, caponata and pasta with rich sauces.
